Flamengo defeated Palmeiras 1-0 to win the Copa Libertadores, becoming the most successful Brazilian team in the history of South America’s top club competition with their fourth title.

Flamengo centre-back Danilo’s second-half header ended a rough encounter on Saturday at Lima’s Estadio Monumental. It was the fifth Libertadores final between the two Brazilian clubs in the past six seasons.

Flamengo’s victory avenges their 2-1 loss to Palmeiras in the 2021 Libertadores final and puts the famous Rio de Janeiro club firmly on track for a hat-trick of trophies in 2025.

Flamengo started the year with victory in the Brazilian Super Cup and need just two points from their remaining two league games to clinch the Brazilian domestic title.

Flamengo won the competition for the third time since 2019 and fourth overall, moving them level with Argentina’s Estudiantes, three places ahead of another Argentine club, Independiente, who have won seven titles.

Meanwhile, Palmeiras missed a golden opportunity to equalize in the 89th minute when Vitor Roque’s close-range shot went over the bar.

This was perhaps Palmeiras’ best chance in a wild final, littered with 33 fouls and seven yellow cards for both teams.

After a rough first half, Flamengo enjoyed the better chances and Bruno Henrique caused the first alarm in Palmeiras’ camp with a high and wide shot in the 15th minute.

Flamengo continued to find space on the flanks and moments later Samuel Lino threatened to break the deadlock by cutting in from the left and sending a shot on target.

But it was the best result for Flamengo in the first half, and the players in red and black were lucky not to be reduced to 10 men after half an hour after a melee broke out when Palmeiras defender Bruno Fuchs brought down Flamengo star Giorgian de Arrascaeta.

As the anger flared, Flamengo’s Chilean international Erik Pulgar flew in and kicked Fuchs, but he managed to escape with just a yellow.

After half-time, Flamengo once again looked a threatening team, although they struggled to create any clear-cut chances.

The breakthrough finally came in the 67th minute, when Alaskaeta swung an inviting corner from the right.

Danilo, inexplicably unmarked, stood up unopposed and headed home for what would be the winning goal.
