An elite unit of the Iranian military planned to assassinate Israel’s ambassador to Mexico, according to a U.S. official familiar with the matter.
The plan was developed by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards’ Quds Force and began in late 2024 and was active until the first half of this year, the people said on condition of anonymity. The plan has since been thwarted and no longer poses a security threat, the official added.
This is part of a series of plots by the Iranian government targeting government officials, journalists, and foreign dissidents.
Iran rejects this claim, calling it a “media creation and a big lie” aimed at worsening relations with Mexico.
“Mexico’s security and reputation is also Iran’s security and reputation,” the Iranian embassy in Mexico wrote in a statement to X. “We will never betray the trust that the Mexican government has placed in us.”
Israel’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement thanking Mexico for “thwarting an Iranian-led terrorist network that attempted to attack the Israeli ambassador in Mexico.” Einat Krantz Nager has been serving as an ambassador since August 2023.
Mexican authorities said they had no record of any conspiracy allegations against the Israeli ambassador.
“Israel’s security and intelligence services, in full cooperation with security and intelligence agencies around the world, continue to work tirelessly to thwart the terrorist threat posed by Iran and its proxies targeting Israel and the Jewish people around the world,” the Israeli Foreign Ministry said.
Israel has long accused Iran of plotting to attack Jews and Israeli targets abroad. Australia expelled Iran’s ambassador in August after the country’s intelligence services found that Iran was behind at least two anti-Semitic attacks on mainland Australia. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) would also be listed as a terrorist organization.
Iran is also planning to assassinate senior US officials, particularly after the killing of Revolutionary Guards commander Qasem Soleimani in January 2020. CNN previously reported that Iran is planning to assassinate former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former National Security Adviser John Bolton.
