India batsman Shreyas Iyer, who suffered a lacerated spleen in a fall in a one-day match against Australia, said he is “getting better day by day”.

The 30-year-old vice-captain collapsed in pain after dismissing Alex Carey with a sensational catch in the third ODI in Sydney on Saturday.

He was rushed to hospital where the Board of Control for Cricket in India revealed that he had suffered internal bleeding.

“I am currently in the recovery process and getting better with each passing day,” Iyer said in his first social media comments since the incident on Thursday.

“I am deeply grateful for all the kind wishes and support I have received. It really means a lot to me.

“Thank you for always reminding me of me,” he added.

India’s Twenty20 captain Suryakumar Yadav said on Tuesday that doctors and physiotherapists had described the injury as “unusual”.

“But rare things happen to rare talents. God is with him. He will recover quickly and we will take him with us,” he said.

Iyer is not part of India’s T20 squad but will play two of the five matches against Australia at a packed Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday.

They lost the opening game in Canberra.
