As fate would have it, he tweeted that he was working on a song and wanted to sing it with the 19-year-old Fearless artist. “I wake up and can’t get the idea for this song out of my head. I’ve been doing this for three days now, which means I’ve had enough,” he wrote in March 2009. “The song is called ‘Half of My Heart,’ and I’d love to sing it with Taylor Swift. She’d be a killer Stevie Nicks as opposed to the Tom Petty in my song.”
So no expectations there at all. However, they came together to record “Half of My Heart” for their 2009 album Battle Studies, released in November of that year, and performed live together several times.
Swift somehow let people know that he was the man who ended the relationship.
Mayer told Rolling Stone in 2012 that he was pretty devastated by his 2010 song “Dear John,” which criticized someone’s “dark, twisted game.” He claimed, “I wasn’t responsible for that. I’m good at taking responsibility now, but I didn’t do anything to deserve it. What she did was really terrible.”
He continued, “I never got an email, I never got a call. I was really caught off guard and really humiliated even though I was already dressed up. I mean, I was at my lowest point ever and how would I feel if someone kicked me even further down the line?”
