Manchester United’s form continues to improve under manager Ruben Amorim and on Saturday they secured their third successive Premier League win with a 4-2 win over Brighton & Hove Albion with braces from Matheus Cunha, Casemiro and Brian Mbeumo.

Cunha, looking to build on last weekend’s first win at Liverpool since 2016, fired a superb shot home into the bottom corner in the 24th minute. It was the Brazilian’s first goal for United.

Casemiro’s second goal ten minutes later was a stroke of good fortune, as his shot went wide before it hit the net, but Mbeumo’s superb third goal just after the hour mark put the hosts in complete control.

Brighton pulled one back with a superb free-kick from his former club Danny Welbeck, before Sharalampos Kostoulas’ header in stoppage time ensured a tense end to the game at Old Trafford.

With Brighton putting everyone up front in search of an equalizer, Mbeumo fired a stunning shot into the roof of the net to move United up to fourth in the table. Brighton remained in 12th place.

“I’m having a lot of fun here,” Mbemo told Sky Sports. “It wasn’t easy at first: new environment, new expectations, but I think with my cooperation with the team, everything is moving in the right direction.”

“The effort we put in, the togetherness on the pitch is key. I like a challenge and I came here to a big club. I want to fight for the best position.”

Brighton’s big test for United

The visitors posed a huge test for United as they continue to improve, given that no team has won more league games against United than Brighton since the start of the 2021-22 season.

United’s win over Liverpool last weekend was Amorim’s first consecutive league wins since he took over 11 months ago, but the manager insisted another loss to Brighton would scupper their comeback.

Brighton started the game strongly, with Welbeck forcing United goalkeeper Senne Lamence into a fine save early on, but Cunha’s pinpoint finish eased the home side’s nerves. Since the start of last season, Cunha has scored more goals from outside the box than any other Premier League player in all competitions.

Casemiro’s deflected attack unsurprisingly put the superior United even further ahead, and there were a number of chances to extend the home side’s lead before the break.

Mbeumo followed up his goal against Liverpool with his third goal, putting United in an unassailable position.

But mistakes crept in and Welbeck proved they were still far from finished as they became the starting point for Brighton’s comeback.

United looked in dire straits as Kostoulas reduced the lead to 3-2, but Mbeumo’s goal in the 96th minute secured the three points, giving the home team their first three consecutive league wins since August 2024.

“We’re in a really difficult position,” Houellebecq said. “We have a great group. We scored two goals and could have possibly gotten a third. It didn’t happen, but it’s a good sign that we showed character.”
