Elon Musk introduced himself and Grimes’ baby boy XÆA-12 to the world on Twitter in May 2020. He later revised the spelling of the name to meet California’s legal guidelines, which allow only the English alphabet. Switching to Roman numerals, his parents agreed to spell his name X Æ A-Xii.
“X, unknown variable,” Grimes explained on Twitter. “Æ, my elf spelling of Ai (love and/or artificial intelligence). A-12 = predecessor to the SR-17 (our favorite aircraft). No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Superior in combat, but non-violent.”
“A=Archangel, my favorite song,” Grimes continued, adding a mouse and sword emoji. “Metal Rat”.
In March 2022, she announced that she welcomed a daughter, Exa Dark Siderel Musk, as a surrogate mother.
“Exa is a reference to the supercomputing term exaFLOPS, the ability to perform 1 quintillion floating point operations per second,” she said. “Darkness, on the other hand, is the ‘unknown’. People fear it, but it is actually the absence of photons. Dark matter is a beautiful mystery of our universe.”
“Sydeel” (pronounced “sigh, deer, yeah, El”) “is real cosmic time, astral time, deep space time, not relative Earth time,” she said, paying homage to her favorite Lord of the Rings character Galadriel, who “chose to renounce the Ring.”
