At least 60 people were killed Friday night and Saturday morning by paramilitary Rapid Support Force drone and artillery fire on a shelter in the Sudanese city of al-Fashir, local activists said.
Al-Fashir is under siege by the RSF, which is fighting for control of the military’s last stronghold in the Darfur region.
The siege spread hunger and disease in the city, and relentless drone and artillery attacks hit shelters, mosques, hospitals and clinics.
“Bodies were left under the rubble, others were burned alive in shelter caravans, and children, women and the elderly were killed in cold blood,” the al-Fashir resistance committee said in a statement early Saturday. In a later statement, the shelter said it had been hit twice by drones and eight times by artillery shells.
Resistance committees said the attack killed hundreds of civilians, and residents told Reuters they had dug bunkers in their homes and neighborhoods for protection.
Activist groups said an average of 30 people die every day in the city from violence, hunger and disease.
