Cristiano Ronaldo has become the first soccer player to reach billionaire status, according to the latest Bloomberg Billionaires Index. The Portuguese great’s net worth is valued at an estimated $1.4 billion, according to the index.

The 40-year-old striker’s financial rise came after he signed a new contract with Saudi Arabia’s Al Nasr in June, said to be worth more than $400 million.

According to Bloomberg, Ronaldo earned a salary of more than $550 million from 2002 to 2023, which, along with a 10-year contract with Nike worth nearly $18 million a year and big-ticket endorsements with Armani and Castrol, increased his fortune by more than $175 million.

Ronaldo moved from Manchester United to Al Nasr in 2023, earning him an annual salary of 177 million pounds (approximately $23.752 billion) plus bonuses, and a reported 15% share in the Saudi club, making him already the highest-paid player in soccer history.

Argentina international and Inter Miami forward Lionel Messi earned more than $600 million in pre-tax salary during his career.

Ronaldo’s billionaire status places him among a rare group of athletes that includes basketball greats Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and LeBron James. Golfer Tiger Woods. and tennis player Roger Federer.

Ronaldo has indicated that he is not considering retirement for the time being.

“I’m still passionate about this,” he said at the Portugal Football Globe Awards gala on Tuesday. “My family tells me it’s time to quit and asks me why I want to score 1,000 goals when I’ve already scored over 900. But in my heart I don’t think so.

“I’m still producing good things. I’m helping the club and the national team. Why not continue? I’ve given it my all and I’m sure I’ll leave with a full stomach when it’s over. I know I don’t have many years left to play, but I have to make the most of the few years I have left.”
