Anthropic announced on Wednesday that it plans to open its first office in India, expanding use of artificial intelligence and entering a market where rival open AI is already moving forward.

of AmazonThe AI company (valued by $183 billion) has announced plans to open an office in Bengaluru in early 2026. The company is second only to its office in Asia after Tokyo, Japan.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amody will visit India this week to meet with civil servants and corporate partners, the company said.

In India, AI adoption is expected to be rapidly progressing in both consumers and businesses. According to the Boston Consulting Group, more than 90% of workers in the county already use AI, marking the highest adoption rate in the world.

“India is attractive thanks to the scale of its technical talent and the government’s commitment to ensure that the benefits of artificial intelligence are delivered not only to some people but to all areas of society,” Amodei said in a press release.

Anthropic said the focus in India is on the introduction of AI aimed at “social impact” in areas such as education and healthcare, and “supporting key industries through strategic partnerships.”

Claude is Anthropic’s main product and a challenger to OpenAI. Anthropic said it will launch “enhanced performances” for Claude in Hindi as well as more than a dozen other languages spoken in India. India is currently second only to the US when it comes to using Claude, Antropic said.

The company’s entry into India came amid rival OpenAI strengthening its entry into India this year. OpenAI is said to have launched a low-cost subscription plan for its flagship product, ChatGPT, and plans to open an office in the country.

However, Anthropic needs to catch up. According to analytics firm Appfigures, India has downloaded 118,000 times in August, compared to ChatGPT 10.3 million times and Perplexity 6.4 million times.

The initiative in India is part of an extensive global expansion plan where Anthropic aims to expand its international workforce and attract more business customers.
