1. X marks the spot

3. Tariffs, Part 2?

Canada may not be the only country about to face new U.S. tariffs. U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer hinted yesterday that President Donald Trump could impose new tariffs soon, telling CNBC that he “hopes to see some action soon.”

Greer said he would need to explain the matter to Congress and other parties, but could not give a specific date. His comments followed reports that the White House could announce new taxes as soon as this week.

As CNBC’s Kevin Breuninger and Megan Casella point out, the White House is seeking to keep President Trump’s tariffs in place through other measures after the Supreme Court struck down many of them. Temporary tariffs imposed by President Trump after the court ruling expire Friday.

In April, the Federal Reserve held a special meeting to warn banks about cybersecurity risks associated with Anthropic’s Mythos Preview artificial intelligence model. The central bank was then inaccessible for months.

As CNBC’s Matt Peterson and Ashley Caputo write, the Fed’s lack of access to this model, which Anthropik said is adept at identifying software weaknesses and security vulnerabilities, left the central bank vulnerable. The Fed had not yet received access to the advanced model as of July 15.

Meanwhile, Anthropic and its rival OpenAI are increasing their lobbying spending. The two AI companies spent a combined more than $3 million on federal lobbying efforts in the second quarter. This is a 23% increase from the first three months of this year.

5. Work on fixes

Several well-known companies are collaborating on a skilled tradesman workforce initiative in hopes of addressing the shortage of tradespeople such as engineers and builders.

As CNBC’s Jessica Dickler reports, google, black rockcarhartt, ford All are members of the American Skilled Trades Alliance. The initiative, announced yesterday, will also work with trade unions and industry groups and invest in apprenticeships, according to a press release.

In other career news, new research has found more than 70% of health students use betting and prediction markets at least twice a week. About two-thirds of these students said they believed the platform would help them finance their education, but fewer than half reported seeing positive benefits.
