Tiger Woods showed signs of impairment and was arrested at the scene of a car accident in which he collided with another vehicle and overturned his Land Rover.

Tiger Woods was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving after a rollover crash on Jupiter Island, Florida, which resulted in no serious injuries.

Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said Woods and the occupants of the other vehicle were not injured. Woods was able to crawl out of the passenger side of the Land Rover.

The crash occurred just after 2:00 p.m. (6:00 p.m. Japan time) on Jupiter Island, not far from where Woods lives. Budensiek said Woods was driving on a two-lane road when he tried to pass a pressure washer truck. He swerved to avoid a collision while passing the truck, but clipped the back end of the trailer. Woods’ car then rolled onto the driver’s side.

Budensiek said investigators at the scene found Woods showing signs of impairment. A breathalyzer test was negative, but he refused a urine test. Budensiek said authorities charged him with driving under the influence, causing property damage and refusing to submit to a legal test. Both charges are misdemeanors.

Woods’ manager at Excel Sports did not immediately respond to a text message seeking information.

This is at least the third time Woods has been involved in a car accident, most recently in February 2021 when his SUV sped off a Los Angeles coastal road, causing multiple leg and ankle injuries. Doctors then considered amputation, Woods said.

Woods has played in 11 tournaments since the accident in 2021, but he didn’t come within 16 shots of a winner four times after 72 holes.

In 2017, he was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving after South Florida police found him asleep behind the wheel of his car, which was awkwardly parked with damage to the driver’s side. Woods said the combination of painkillers was bad. He later pleaded guilty to reckless driving.

Woods won his fifth Masters and 15th major in 2019. He has 82 wins on the PGA Tour, tying him with Sam Snead for the most wins of all time.

Woods, 50, was working toward a return to golf after undergoing his seventh hip surgery in September. He had not yet decided whether he would be able to participate in the April 9-12 Masters.

His last official tournament was the British Open in 2024. Woods tore his Achilles tendon in March 2025, which kept him off the course all season before undergoing back surgery. He was able to play in the indoor TGL Golf League on Tuesday night.

He remains deeply involved in the operations of the PGA Tour as chairman of the Future Competitions Committee, which is reshaping the Tour’s model.

Woods also faced a soft deadline at the end of this month to decide whether to be named U.S. Ryder Cup captain for the 2027 match in Ireland. Woods was offered the job at the last Ryder Cup and didn’t turn it down until June. This time, the PGA of America is hoping for a quicker decision.
