Meta announced Monday that it is rolling out the Meta AI chatbot within Threads DMs, giving users a way to chat with an AI assistant.
Threads users in some markets can already interact with Meta AI in public posts similar to Grok on X, but this new integration will allow users to have private conversations with the AI assistant.
By giving users an easy way to converse with AI chatbots, Meta aims to keep users within its ecosystem, discouraging them from using third-party assistants like OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google Gemini.
Meta AI is already available within DMs on Meta’s other platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

The new integration will allow users to share Threads posts, images, links, and videos directly to Meta AI. You can also ask follow-up questions or dig deeper into the topic.
The update will be rolled out globally starting Monday, the company said.
Meta said it continues to test Meta AI on Threads’ public feed in a small number of global markets and will consider feedback before expanding availability more broadly. Users who want to see fewer Meta AI replies in their feed can mute @meta.ai, use the “Not Interested” option on Meta AI posts, or hide Meta AI replies from posts.
By further integrating Meta AI into Threads, Meta is positioning its X rival as a place to get information and recommendations without leaving the app.
