Headlines are filled with doom and gloom predictions about the future of work and relationships in the age of artificial intelligence.
But best-selling author and wellness leader Deepak Chopra isn’t afraid of this new technology.
“AI is here to stay,” he told CNBC Make It. “And while it can be used for harmful purposes, and it can be misused, it can also be beneficial.”
Chopra recently launched a wellness platform that features guided meditations, a community message board, and its own AI chatbot. The bot draws on his decades of writing and speaking to coach users on best practices for their own physical and mental health journeys.
General-purpose chatbots such as ChatGPT and Claude have limitations, despite their ability to extract a wealth of information. These bots “have access to humanity’s entire database and knowledge base,” Chopra said. But “they have no wisdom.”
For example, Claude may be able to provide you with a script for talking to a friend who hurt your feelings, but he doesn’t understand the complexity of the human experience.
AI is an algorithm that responds to prompts and “has no spontaneous empathy or compassion,” Chopra said. Instead, it is self-exploration that AI can assist with.
Chopra says the best use for AI chatbots is self-discovery.
He says that with the spread of social media, appearance has become overwhelmingly important. “Now everyone has lost self-esteem, because self-esteem has been replaced by self-image.”
Regardless of external messages, he says, by knowing who you are, what’s important to you, and what your value system is, you can begin to reprioritize and focus on activities that are more in line with what brings you joy.
Chopra suggests asking the following questions when choosing an AI chatbot:
What do I really want? What is my purpose? What am I grateful for? How can I cultivate compassion for myself? How can I cultivate compassion for others? How can I create joy in my life?
Bots can’t experience your every emotion and haven’t lived your life, so they won’t always have the right answer. But the answers can help you learn more about yourself, Chopra says.
“I come from a traditional language,” he says. “Know that one thing. By knowing that, you can know everything. And that one thing is yourself.”
