At least 22 people have been injured after being fired from Yemen.
Videos and images of emergency responders and Israeli military personnel appear to show drone landings near stores and restaurants. The drone was fired at the final time of Rosh Hashana’s holiday, marking the Jewish New Year.
Iran-backed Houtsis has repeatedly launched drones and ballistic missiles in Irat and other parts of southern Israel, but these launches are frequently intercepted. It is unclear how drones permeated Israeli air defense on Wednesday.
“An attempt to intercept has been made and the search and rescue teams are operating in the area where reports have been received regarding the impact,” the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) said in a statement.
Many of the people injured in the attack suffered rap shots from the explosion, according to Israeli emergency response service Magen David Adom (MDA). The seriously injured 60-year-old man was hit by a rap shot in his arms and legs, but the seriously injured 26-year-old man suffered rap shot wounds to his chest, the MDA said. According to the MDA, another person suffered moderate injuries.
The IDF said in another statement that its forces “we are helping to evacuate civilians from the area and provide initial medical care.”
“IDF helicopters have been dispatched and are currently helping to evacuate injured individuals from the scene,” he added.
Yemeni Houthi extremist groups later argued responsibility for the attack, calling it a “qualitative military operation.”
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has vowed to revenge against the Housis after the attack on the city. “The Houthi terrorists refuse to learn from Iran, Lebanon and Gaza. They will learn the difficult way,” Katz said in a statement.
“Anyone who harms Israel will do seven times more harm,” Katz added.
The drone launched from Yemen from early September collided with the arrival hall at Ramon Airport in southern Israel on Sunday, Israeli forces and Israeli airport officials said. The sirens were not heard because the drone was identified but not adversarial classification, the IDF said. “Expanded research” was expected.
Since the Israeli war with Hamas in Gaza began in October 2023, the country has been fired from missiles and drones from the Housis in Yemen, which claims to attack Israel in solidarity with the Palestinians. Israel has carried out a wave of strikes targeting Houthi military facilities and civil infrastructure that the IDF says is being used by Houthis.
However, long-distance fire replacements have escalated recently.
In late August, Yemen’s Houthi rebels vowed to revenge against the killing of the prime minister and other political leaders in Israel’s airstrikes earlier that month.
Israel attacked the Houtis after Iran-backed rebels launched a new type of missile in Israel. Israeli forces said it struck the military location where the Presidential Palace is located, two power plants and a fuel storage site.
Houthis confirmed that Prime Minister Ahmed Al-Rahawi was murdered on a strike in Yemen’s capital Sanaa, while others were seriously injured. Al-Rahawi is the most senior figure in Hutis, backed by Iranians killed in Israeli campaign against the group.
This is a developing story.
