The market tension reflects uncertainty ahead of a crucial week for stocks. Even if megacaps themselves are depressed, the chip trade hinges on continued spending from hyperscalers, with investors bracing for earnings from Amazon, Metaplatform, and Microsoft. Apple will also report this week.

“We’re going to hear from all the hyperscalers this week about their intentions to further increase their capex. So those stocks may be under pressure,” Stephanie Link, chief investment strategist at Hightower, said Monday on CNBC’s “Closing Bell.” “As long as the hyperscalers are spending, that’s fine. That’s helping the economy.”

The Fed is expected to make an interest rate decision on Wednesday as well. Investors expect the central bank to keep policy on hold at its July meeting, but to seek more clarity on the future direction of monetary policy. The last time federal funds futures priced in a quarter-point rate hike was in September, according to the CME FedWatch tool.
