Sora update brings AI pet videos, new social features, and Android version coming soon

OpenAI has teased a series of updates coming to its viral AI-generated video app Sora. The app recently shot to the top of the App Store after its release in late September. The app, which remains number one in the US and Canada, introduces video editing tools, gives users the ability to create character “cameos” of pets and other objects, improves social features and more. Additionally, the company says that an Android version of the app is “actually coming soon.”

The announcement was made on X by Sora head Bill Peebles, who said the new authoring tools will be coming in the next few days. These include the ability to turn pets and other items, such as “favorite stuffed animals and pretty much anything else,” into cameos.

sora roadmap updates: In the spirit of building this app openly, here’s what’s coming soon.

First, add a creation tool. A cameo appearance for the character is expected in the coming days. You’ll be able to make a cameo appearance on your dog, guinea pig, favorite stuffed animal, and pretty much anything else… pic.twitter.com/GX7CJXWRcZ

The term “Cameo” refers to a Sora feature that allows users to create their own AI persona after providing a recorded video as a reference file to the app. These cameos can be shared with friends and others, allowing you to create videos with your AI characters.

“We expect people to subscribe to this feature with lots of crazy new cameos. To make it easier to find them, we’re updating the generation UI to display the latest trending cameos in real-time,” Peebles wrote on X.

Additionally, the app will introduce basic video editing features, starting with stitching together multiple clips. More tools will be added over time. Updates to the social experience are also in the works. This adds new ways to use Sora with your friends. These may include dedicated channels specific to universities, businesses, sports clubs, etc.

The company says it is working to reduce excessive generation moderation, which some users have complained is too strict, and improve overall app performance.

The app is currently listed on the Google Play Store for pre-registration, but OpenAI has not yet announced a release date. Peebles said it should go live “soon,” but gave no further details.

According to third-party app store data from Appfigures, Sora is estimated to have been downloaded approximately 2 million times in less than a month after its release. This number is notable considering the app remains invite-only and has only been released in the US and Canada.
