Speaking of who plans the planner’s wedding… fans of the movie weren’t the only ones hoping for a sequel.
Ellis told Entertainment Weekly in 2019 that he originally envisioned a trilogy (and an entire television series). In the next movie, Mary goes full bridezilla and says she and her BFF Penny (screen pal Judy Greer) are planning Mary and Steve’s wedding.
“The appeal of this show is that she ends up becoming exactly the same thing that she hated, and then she takes a step back and realizes what’s important to her,” Ellis explained.
On the other hand, there will be “grit” between Mary and Steve who may realize that they “didn’t see each other realistically” during the events of the previous film. “There were some interesting romantic questions there.”
But what will the third movie contain? “We also discussed the idea of Mary finding out she’s pregnant while planning her wedding, which would lead to the third movie, ‘Mary Plans Her Daughter’s Wedding!'” Ellis shared. However, their idea was that Mary and Steve broke up at some point but found their way back to each other while preparing for their child’s big day.
“It’s going to involve the idea of what she wants for her daughter and what her daughter wants. Whatever her journey is in the second film, I think in the third film she’s going to learn her lessons and try to teach her daughter what she’s learned, and maybe try to keep her away from the grand spectacle because it doesn’t mean anything,” said the British writer. “What matters is the person you’re with. She’ll try to teach her daughter that lesson.”
Hmm, we are so conflicted! It might be a fun movie (one that could be made right now, by the way), but is the idea of Steve and Mary getting divorced something we even want to consider? In a way, it defeats the purpose of early 2000s romantic comedies.
