Nvidia’s Huang to visit China as AI chip sales stall

Beijing — Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is scheduled to visit China in the coming days ahead of the Lunar New Year in mid-February, two people familiar with the matter told CNBC.

The visit comes amid questions about the U.S. semiconductor giant’s ability to sell in the Chinese market, which once accounted for at least a fifth of Nvidia’s revenue from its data center business.

U.S. export controls have prevented Nvidia from selling cutting-edge chips to China as the U.S. government seeks to maintain an advantage over China in chips used to develop cutting-edge artificial intelligence.

Fan is scheduled to attend an Nvidia party in Beijing on Monday, said one of the people, who requested anonymity to discuss the trip.

He also plans to meet with potential buyers in China to discuss recent logistical challenges in supplying U.S.-approved NVIDIA chips to the market, according to a person with direct knowledge of the trip plans.

The Information reported last week, citing sources, that China would approve domestic purchases of Nvidia’s H200 AI chip only for limited purposes such as research. Asked about the report on Thursday, China’s Ministry of Commerce claimed it was not aware of the situation.

Bloomberg first reported news of Huang’s visit to China earlier this week. Nvidia declined to comment on executives’ travel plans.

Huang visited mainland China at least three times last year, including for Lunar New Year celebrations in January.
