English soccer giants Manchester United have parted ways with head coach Reuben Amorim shortly after he raised questions about his role at the club amid rumors of tensions within the club’s hierarchy.
The 40-year-old, who was appointed in November 2024, finished 15th out of 20 teams in the Premier League, English soccer’s top division, last season, the worst result in the club’s history.
A statement from the New York Stock Exchange-listed club said the move “gives the team the best opportunity to achieve the best results in the Premier League.”
As of 7 a.m. ET, the stock was stable in premarket trading, up about 0.1%.
Amorim becomes Manchester United’s first manager after billionaire Jim Ratcliffe acquired a minority stake in the club from the Glazer family in February 2024. Ratcliffe initially acquired a 27.7% stake, then increased his stake to 28.94% in December 2024, and has been in control of all football operations ever since.
Since his first deal, worth $1.6 billion, Ratcliffe has also made a series of changes to the club’s structure, hiring a new CEO and director of football.
Before his departure, Amorim hinted at his dissatisfaction with his role at the club following Sunday’s draw with Leeds United.
“I just want to say, I’m not just going to be a coach, I’m going to be the manager of this team. I knew that for sure. It was going to end in 18 months and then everyone would move on. That was the contract. That’s my job. It’s not about being the coach.”
The club is currently in 6th place in the Premier League.
Manchester United have announced that former player Darren Fletcher will lead the team in their next game against Burnley on Wednesday.
