As emergency services work hard to extinguish wildfires in Spain and France, and temperatures are expected to rise in the worst-hit areas by midweek, we are closely monitoring the latest developments.
Here we take a closer look at the situation in two major fire areas.
France has carried out the largest peacetime evacuation since World War II as fires rage in the Gironde region. Many people have been evacuated in Bordeaux, France’s sixth most populous metropolitan area.
According to census data, about 1 million people live in the metropolitan area, but only about 270,000 residents live in the city itself, according to the World Population Review. The mayor said today that the city is not under immediate threat, but surrounding areas have been evacuated.
Le Polge, a commune of 3,500 people west of Bordeaux, was devastated.
Meanwhile, at least one person has died in wildfires in Spain.
According to Spain’s Interior Ministry, more than 100,000 people have been evacuated, including nearly 30,000 in the Madrid region alone.
Spanish firefighters are focused on preventing two wildfires west of the capital from merging, local media said.
