India’s teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has shown remarkable maturity over the past six months, qualities that have enabled him to thrive in high-pressure matches following the rapid rise of cricket, India’s T20 coach VVS Laxman said.
Suryavanshi scored an 18-ball half-century in the opening T20 match against Zimbabwe and scored 81 runs on Sunday as India thrashed the hosts 3-0.

The 15-year-old, who rapidly entered the world of international cricket after a breakthrough season in the Indian Premier League, was named player of the series after scoring his first half-century in the three-match contest.
“Very mature. That’s what I really appreciate about Vaibhav,” Laxman told reporters in Zimbabwe.
“With every experience and every match, he understands, evaluates and improves. He reviews every practice session, not just the matches.”
“His maturity, understanding and awareness have improved tremendously over the last six months, which is why he has been able to handle tough situations and perform under pressure against the best players.”
Sooryavanshi’s success in Southern Africa comes after a difficult start to his international career with England earlier this month.
The youngest player to represent India scored scores of 14, 13 and 15 in his first three T20 internationals, but was eliminated in the fifth match.
Laxman, who has overseen Sooryavanshi’s development from age-group cricket to the IPL to the senior national team, said the teenager’s desire to learn has been one of his biggest strengths, but managing his fitness remains a key area of development.

“What we want him to improve on is his overall fitness,” Laxman said.
“He’s a very young kid. He wants to get better himself in all aspects of the game.
“Even today, with the injury, he still wanted to stay on the field,” the coach added, referring to Sooryavanshi’s effort to take a diving catch from deep square leg.
“It was our physio who asked him to leave. That’s the enthusiasm and seriousness with which he tries to contribute to the team in every way.”
Laxman said he was not worried about the left-hander’s struggles in England and would support him to make a strong start to international cricket.
“I am sure he will progress and break all records at international level. He has all the potential and ability to make it happen,” he added.
