Several charities said they cut ties with Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York in England, on Monday after media reported that they described sex criminal Jeffrey Epstein as “the best friend” in an email.
Ferguson, 65, the ex-wife of King Charles’ brother, Prince Andrew, sent a message to Epstein in 2011, according to the Sun in the newspaper Sunday.
Epstein pleaded guilty to state prostitution in Florida in 2008 and agreed to register as a sex offender.
The Sun says Ferguson, often known by the nickname “Fergie,” emailed disgraceful lenders to apologise for her comments, saying he was always a constant friend of her and her family.
A Ferguson spokesman declined to comment on the charity’s actions. She said she had previously emailed Epstein because she wanted to counter the threat that could sue her for her delinquent loss.
On Monday, at least five charities said the Duchess could no longer continue as one of her patrons.
“We were prevented from reading communications with Sarah, Duchess of York, Jeffrey Epstein,” said Nadim and Tanya Ednan Lepers, who are founders of the Natasha Allergy Research Foundation, the founder of the charity.
“She was a patron, but in light of recent revelation, we have decided that it would be inappropriate for her to continue to be involved.
