We’ve all had the experience of finally growing our hair long, but wanting to cut it right away. Call it the Circle of Life (or celebrity inspiration from Keira Knightley and Gracie Abrams).
In any case, before committing to a big cut, it’s worth knowing exactly what you want and how to style it, especially after your hair starts to grow.
To help you on your bob journey, E! spoke to celebrity hairstylist Sally Hershberger, who has worked with icons like Julia Roberts, Meg Ryan, and Miley Cyrus.
Whether you’re thinking of a tousled French bob or a sophisticated ’90s style, Sally says: “The most important thing you can do is bring in a visual reference.”
“Photos are the best way to convey what you want, whether it’s Instagram, Vogue, or where you saw your favorite cut.”
“You also need to be specific about where you want the length to go. Is it at the chin, directly below, or over the shoulders? Because even the slightest difference can completely change your overall look,” she advised.
Since the bob is not a one-size-fits-all haircut, Sally makes it a point to give her hairstylist precise instructions. That being said, the longtime celebrity stylist explained that a good stylist will tailor the cut to your face, shape, and natural hair texture.
After all, a fresh chop is “about accentuating your features and customizing the shape to match the natural way your hair falls,” Sally said.
