10. Regarding Andy’s style for the rest of the film, Patch explained to CNN, “Instead of me designing it, I wanted to use different designers to make it more realistic.” Customers turned to Yves Saint Laurent, Prada, Marni, Narciso Rodriguez, and Marc Jacobs to assemble stylish author’s wardrobes.
11. Petrie was a big proponent of actors improvising in scenes, explaining that he “loves working in sneaky ways to keep things fresh and current.”
“I’m going to go to Kate and say, ‘Hey, let’s see if we can get him to do this?'” he shared. “And I’m going to go to Matthew and say, ‘Let’s see if we can get her to do that,’ but you guys are at odds, so each of them is given an intention that the other is going to try to stop.”
One shining example comes in the scene where Andy surprises Benjamin by bringing his dog into the office. “I was standing with Kate and I saw Matthew looking across the room and doing his hair,” Petrie recalled. “I turned to Kate and said, ‘It’s not in the script, but at some point in the scene, try to start kissing and ruffle your hair as much as you can.’ And right away Kate was so excited about the scene that she knew this secret.”
Rather than be cut off for the unexpected gesture, McConaughey “received it, and I knew that at any time I could throw something at these two actors and they would go along with it,” Petrie said.
