Boxing icons Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao will meet in a professional rematch in Las Vegas on September 19th, with the fight to be streamed worldwide on Netflix, fighters and promoters have announced.

The rematch will be the first boxing event to be held at the Sphere, an immersive event venue east of the Las Vegas Strip.

Mayweather, who turns 49 on Tuesday, announced last week his intention to end his nine-year retirement from competitive boxing. Pacquiao, 47, ended his four-year retirement last year and is scheduled to face Ruslan Provodnikov on April 18th in his second fight.

Mayweather and Pacquiao did not announce the weight class or distance for their second fight.

The two most prominent boxers of their generation will meet again 11 years after Mayweather defeated Pacquiao by decision in a fight that didn’t live up to a decade of hype. The fight’s promoter claimed it was the most profitable fight in history, setting pay-per-view records and attracting worldwide attention.

“I have already fought once and defeated Manny,” Mayweather said in a statement. “It will be the same this time.”

Pacquiao later revealed that he battled a shoulder injury because he did not want to postpone such an important event.

Mayweather, comfortable in his victory, employed his typical defense-first strategy but was unable to apply his usual offensive pressure.

Pacquiao, who has a record of 62 wins, 8 losses, and 3 draws with 39 KOs, expressed confidence that he can inflict Mayweather’s first professional loss.

“The fans have waited long enough. They deserve this rematch,” Pacquiao said.

“I want Floyd to accept this one loss on his professional record and always remember who gave it to him.”

The Fighters’ first matchup came more than 50 years after fans first began clamoring for an unambiguous matchup between two great fighters of similar size.

Both men at times blamed the other for the delay, but Mayweather always insisted he would fight anyone he wanted, and many fans believed that age meant he waited until he felt Pacquiao’s famously brutal punches hurt a little before agreeing to the fight.

Although it’s been more than a decade since both fighters were in their prime, Mayweather and Pacquiao remain two of the biggest names in boxing.

After Mayweather defeated Conor McGregor in 2017 and retired with a 50-0 record, Mayweather spent much of his 40s competing against YouTubers and fringe competitors in lucrative boxing “exhibitions” while maintaining a largely lavish lifestyle outside the ring.

He is currently in legal disputes with multiple creditors over issues ranging from unpaid rent on his Manhattan apartment to unpaid jewelry bills.

Mayweather has announced he will face 59-year-old Mike Tyson in another exhibition bout this spring, but the location and date of the fight have not yet been determined.

Pacquiao unsuccessfully ran for president in his home country of the Philippines, and also lost in the Philippine Senate election last May.

He returned to the ring two months after that political setback, fighting World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight champion Mario Barrios to a majority decision to become the oldest 147-pound champion.

The rematch is the latest bout to hit Netflix as the network continues to scoop top fights on its live sports programming. The streamer will feature Terrence Crawford’s victory over Canelo Alvarez last year and will feature heavyweight champion Tyson Fury’s return fight in April.

The Sphere venue opened in 2023 and hosted the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) show in 2024. UFC president Dana White said the promotion had to pay about $20 million to produce the show, about 10 times the cost of a typical UFC pay-per-view event, due to the venue’s unusual capacity and requirements.
