Is gua sha necessary at a red light? It depends.
Dr. Engleman says that while gua sha tools are beneficial on their own, adding an LED red light to your massage tool can make your ritual even better. Working by supporting collagen production and skin repair, gua sha improves blood circulation.
“The key is to choose a device that provides adequate light intensity, as many small hand-held tools do not provide enough energy to obtain meaningful results,” she said.
But with all the LED red light devices out there, how do you know what to look for? Dr. Ingleman shared some do’s and don’ts when purchasing these tools.
First, look for the small FDA seal. Next, pay attention to the intensity at each wavelength. “The key to whether a device is effective is to look for the right wavelength, typically 630-660 nm for red light, 800-850 nm for near-infrared light, and consistent light intensity,” she told us.
“We prioritize quality and comfort so that it can be easily integrated into your daily routine and used consistently.”
Below are some LED red light therapy tools that fit these criteria.
