Denmark’s Aarborg airport was closed after drone sightings

Airport CEO Neils Hemmingen told CNN on Wednesday that airspace above Denmark’s Aalborg airport was closed after he discovered drones flying.

According to Flightradar24, at least three inbound flights have been redirected, with two outbound flights and one inbound being cancelled.

Police are currently investigating and have not yet decided who controls the drone or what its purpose is, Reuters reported.

This week marks the second time a Danish airport has been forced to close due to drones.

On Monday, sightings of two or three large drones near Copenhagen Airport stopped all takeoffs and landings for nearly four hours.

It is unclear whether the drone that flew near Aalborg Airport is the same as the Copenhagen airport.

Danish National Police Commissioner Thorkild Fogde told CNN on Tuesday that they were not amateur or hobby drones, but large drones that are likely to have competent operators, but police have yet to identify who is behind them.

In Norway, airspace above Oslo Airport was closed for about three hours on Tuesday morning. Fogde said there were no indications that the Copenhagen incident was linked to the sighting of the Oslo drone.

Europe has been on alert since Russian drones violated both Poland and Romanian airspace earlier this month, urging NATO allies to pledge to strengthen their defenses on the eastern flank of the bloc.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
