Bayern Munich have won 16 games out of 16 this season, underscoring their credentials as early favorites to win the UEFA Champions League by defeating holders Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 away, despite Luis Diaz scoring twice and being shown a red card.

The Colombian winger scored twice on Tuesday before being sent off for a violent tackle on Achraf Hakimi just before half-time.

PSG, who had reduced their arrears thanks to the efforts of coach Joao Neves, dominated the ball after the break but were unable to reach a full count, falling to their first defeat in this tournament since last season’s quarter-final second leg against Aston Villa.

The result left Bayern at the top of the 36-team league with 12 points, with PSG in third with three points, but injury concerns were further heightened by the early substitutions of Hakimi and Ousmane Dembele.

“The most important thing is that I hope it’s not too bad for Hakimi. We had this experience in the United States (against PSG in the Club World Cup) with (Jamal) Musiala,” Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said at a press conference.

“What I would like to say to the players is when there is hype, don’t believe it. We won 16 games, but from tomorrow we will be back to zero. No player has won the Champions League today.”

PSG coach Luis Enrique echoed that view, saying: “Today’s position means nothing. What matters is February, March, April and May.”

PSG captain Marquinhos said: “It’s always tough to lose at home. We have to assert ourselves and play better. We played against a well-organized team, especially physically. We couldn’t progress in the game.”

“There are still some positives from this game. The team remains ambitious, but we have to try harder. They were better than us. We had the upper hand in the second half, but that was after the red card.”

10-man Bayern maintain dramatic win

Dembele made his first Champions League start of the season, but his night didn’t last long, with the French forward being replaced by Lee Kang-in after 25 minutes.

PSG defeated Bayern 2-0 in the Club World Cup quarter-finals in July, using their trademark high pressing to make a good start, but they suffered a called loss in the fourth minute when Diaz scored after Lucas Chevalier parried a shot from Michael Olise.

Dembélé thought he had equalized midway through the first half, but his goal was ruled out for offside as PSG pressed, but his side looked uncharacteristically vulnerable at the back.

Moments later, Manuel Neuer made a brilliant save to deny Bradley Barcola, who ran in on a pinpoint long ball from Fabian Ruiz.

Bayern maintained their lead and added another goal in the 32nd minute when Dias pounced on a sleepy Marquinhos and stole the ball after Serge Gnabry hit the post.

Diaz’s night ended abruptly just before half-time when he was shown a straight red card for a violent lunge on Hakimi, leaving him in tears as he limped off with a suspected ankle injury.

PSG had possession for a long time in the second half, but they lacked the edge until the 74th minute, when substitute Neves cut down on time with a superb scissor kick from Lee’s cross.

PSG increased their pressure and a few minutes later Neves came close to leveling the score with a header. Despite a late panic from the hosts, Bayern held firm.
