An American tourist was stabbed to death and another injured during an attempted robbery early Wednesday in the coastal town of Cascais, west of Lisbon, authorities said.

The incident occurred near the Church of the Navigator and emergency services were called at around 3:16 a.m., CNN Portugal reported.

Investigators said one of the tourists was returning to his hotel when three suspects confronted him and attempted to rob him. The victim resisted, was hit, and attempted to flee while calling for help from friends. A second tourist was also assaulted upon arriving at the scene.

The attackers fatally stabbed one man and seriously injured another before fleeing.

Three suspects have been arrested and are currently being investigated by police. One of the men is charged with murder, and the other man is charged with participating in the assault.

The victim’s death was first reported by Correio da Mañão and later confirmed by CNN Portugal.

Officials said emergency medical teams from the National Institute for Medical Emergency Medicine (INEM) tried to resuscitate the man, but the stab wounds were deep and affected vital organs.

The second victim was taken to Lisbon’s Santa Maria Hospital. Hospital officials said he suffered deep cuts to his face and arms, but his condition was not serious.

The State Department told CNN it is aware of reports that two American tourists were attacked in Cascais and stands ready to provide consular assistance.
