The Trump administration is planning to federate 300 members of the Illinois State Guard, Democratic government JB Pretzker said on Saturday.
Pretzker said the guards received words in the morning that the troops would be called from the Pentagon. He didn’t specify when or where it would be deployed, but President Donald Trump has long threatened to send troops to Chicago.
“This morning, the Trump administration’s War Department gave me an ultimatum. We’ll call your troops or we’ll do that,” Pretzker said in a statement. “It is absolutely outrageous and American to ask the governor to send the troops against our own borders and our will.”
The governor’s office did not immediately respond to requests for additional details. The White House and the Pentagon did not answer questions about the Pretzker’s statement.
The escalation of federal law enforcement in Illinois continues to have similar developments in other parts of the country. Trump deployed the National Guard in Los Angeles in the summer, and the Tennessee State Guard is expected to help Memphis police as part of a law enforcement acquisition in Washington, D.C.
Pretzker called Trump’s move in Illinois a “manufactured performance” that separates the state’s National Guard troops from their families and regular work.
“For Donald Trump, this wasn’t about safety. It’s about control,” the governor said. The governor said state, county and local law enforcement is adjusting to ensure the safety of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Broadview facility located outside Chicago.
Federal officials reported 13 arrests They protested Friday near the facility. Surge in immigration enforcement This fall.
Trump said he said to him last month. They sent federal troops to Portland, Oregon.calling the city a ruined war. However, local officials suggest that many of his claims and social media posts appear to rely on 2020 images that grabbed the city after the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police.
City and state officials pleaded to halt the deployment the following day. US District Judge Karin J. Imargat heard the debate on Friday, but a ruling is expected over the weekend.
Trump has made 200 National Guard federal government in Oregon, but so far it doesn’t look like they’ve moved to Portland. They have been watching the shore training in anticipation of the development.
