Social Security Cola may be late
Government closures could delay the release of key economic data.
The new consumer price index data is scheduled to be released on October 15th. The Social Security Administration is planning to announce adjustments to cost-of-living for 2026 this month based on the data.
According to the Ministry of Labor, delayed release of CPI data could have an impact when Social Security COLA is announced.
More than 74 million beneficiaries could see an increase in monthly payments for next year based on annual inflation adjustments. Estimates released in September show that profits increase by 2.8% from 2.7% in 2026, with an average retirement benefit increase of approximately $54 a month.
“The question is, will it be a long closing?”
According to the Bipartisan Policy Center, there have been 14 closures since 1980, as the federal government does not count what is now.
Maria Fries, a senior member of the National Committee for Preserving Social Security and Medicare, feels the lapse is “different” due to strong political opposition between political parties.
On Tuesday, President Donald Trump said the lapse of federal funding could lead to “irreversible” cuts in healthcare and social benefits programs. Trump did not elaborate exactly which programs could be affected. The White House did not respond to requests for details per press time.
The National Committee to Maintain Social Security and Medicare is telling people that benefits checks will continue to go out, Freeze said.
“The question is, will it be a long closing?” Freeze said. “It takes time to close these agencies, so if it’s only a few days, people really don’t notice.”
