NEW YORK (AP) – New York Mayor Eric Adams concluded his struggles with reelection campaign on Sunday. This admitted that he was no longer a reliable candidate after a year of scandal and political turmoil.

In a video released on social media, Adams proudly spoke about his tenure as mayor. But he said his now deathmass Federal Corruption Case “Continuous media speculation” about his future was on his guard against him.

“Despite everything we have achieved, we cannot continue our reelection campaign,” he said.

Adams did not support any of the remaining candidates in the race, but he warned of “insidual forces” using local government to “advance the divisive agenda.”

Associated Press Correspondent Julie Walker reports New York City Mayor Eric Adams will abandon his reelection campaign

“It’s not going to change, it’s chaos,” Adams said. “Instead, I urge New Yorkers to choose their leaders based on what they offer, not what they promise.”

Adams’ surrender could potentially provide a lift to the campaign of fellow centralist Andrew Cuomo, who portrayed himself as the only candidate who could beat Democratic candidate, state legislative member Zoran Mamdani.

However, it is unclear whether Adams’ supporters will shift their loyalty to Kaomo to make a difference.

When elected, Mamdani, 33, will become the youngest and most liberal mayor of his generation. he Decisive defeat of Cuomo in the Democratic primary Try reducing your cost of living in one of the world’s most expensive cities by campaigning for your promises.

Mamdani, Cuomo and Sliwa stay in the race

In a statement after Adams’ announcement, Mamdani targeted Cuomo. Cuomo is about to make a political comeback after resigning from the governor’s office after being accused of sexual harassment by multiple women.

“New York is better than trading one dishonorable corrupt politician for another. On November 4th, we turn the page on politics of big money and small ideas, delivering a government that every New Yorker can be proud of,” Mamdani said.

Cuomo praised Adams in a social media statement for “putting New York City happiness ahead of personal ambitions.”

“We are faced with the power of devastating extremists that devastate our cities through incompetence and ignorance, but it’s never too late to stop them,” Cuomo said.

Republican Curtis Swawa also remains in the race, but his candidacy is undercut from within his own party. In a recent interview, Trump called him “not exactly prime time.”

A rough show in the poll

Speculation that Adams won’t reach Election Day has been ramped for a year. His campaign was seriously injured by both bribery and liberal anger over his warm relationship with President Donald Trump. He skipped the Democratic primary and voted on the vote as an independent.

A poll conducted in early September shows his challenges. One poll by the New York Times and Siena University, and the other by Quinnipiac University, showed voters who support Mamdani over Cuomo, and Sriwa and Adams take over the back.

A Kinipiac poll suggested that if Adams drops out, the gap between Mamdani and Cuomo could be narrowed. A Times/Siena poll suggested that Mamdani’s advantages could be further reduced over Cuomo if both Adams and Sliwa retreated.

However, Sliwa repeatedly insists that he will not stop.

“Curtis Swa is the only candidate who can defeat Mamdani,” his spokesman Daniel Kurzina said on Sunday.

In recent weeks, Trump administration brokers have approached Adams to see if intermediaries interested in blocking Mamdani’s path to victory in a one-on-one matchup with Cuomo can unite from the contest with government work offers.

In his report on these debates, Adams called for a press conference where he continued running, vowing to have deceived Cuomo and Mamdani as “spoiled brats.” Later on social media, Adams called Cuomo “a liar and a snake.”

The charges will proceed

Adams, 65, is the city’s second black mayor. The former New York City Police Captain and Brooklyn Borough president took office in 2022 with a promise to crack down on crime and revitalize the city bouncing off the coronavirus pandemic.

He succeeded due to his signature issue. It is not unclear how much the crime rates that were etched upwards after Covid-19 hit cities have to do with Adams’ policies.

However, scandals and corruption probes cripple Adams’ chances in another term.

Over the long term last year, his police chief, school prime minister and several deputy mayors resigned after a series of federal attacks on his home. No one is facing criminal charges.

Then in late September, federal prosecutors accused Adams of accepting illegal campaign contributions from Turkish officials and others and sudden travel discounts, and subsequently accusing him of promoting the opening of Turkish diplomatic construction, among other things.

Trump intervenes

Adams denied the misconduct and promised to take office. He also began to speak warmly about Trump, and then he was seen as an increasing opportunity to reclaim the White House. He defended Trump in a media briefing, urging his party to defeat rhetoric against the Republican Party, and refrained from criticizing him.

After Trump won, Adams met with Trump’s border emperor Thomas Homan.

Then, in February, Trump’s Justice Department ordered federal prosecutors in New York to withdraw the charges against Adams, allowing the mayor to support the Republican president’s immigration agenda.

The extraordinary intervention sparked a fresh uproar at City Hall and at the Manhattan US law firm, with some of Adams’ closest allies suggesting he had made a deal with the White House for his freedom.

Adams announced he would skip the Democratic primary in June but would remain in the race.

In late August, Adams’ former top adviser who volunteered for the campaign was hit hard by fresh bribery charges. Another former aide was removed from the campaign after handing a local reporter a potato chip bag full of cash.
