Paceman Jayden Shields took West Indies’ fourth five-wicket haul to lead them to a 90-run victory over Pakistan in the opening Test match at Taroba in Trinidad and Tobago.
On Tuesday, the fourth day of the match, West Indies took a 29-run lead in the first innings before scoring 181 in the second, setting Pakistan’s target at 211.

Shields (5-20) and his pace colleagues returned to display some fine fast bowling at the Brian Lara Stadium, defeating Pakistan for 120 in 40 overs with one day’s play remaining.
Pakistan captain Babar Azam, unbeaten on 58 matches, put up brief resistance in combination with No. 11 Mohammad Abbas, 23, but West Indies’ victory looked like a formality as the tourists slumped to 71-9.
Pakistan’s No. 3 Shan Masood broke his finger in the first innings knock of 109, but batted at No. 8 in the second innings. He achieved three before the SEALs fired him.
Captain Roston Chase dedicated the victory to West Indies great Garry Sobers, who passed away earlier this month.
“We wanted to make him proud and we talked about it before the game. I hope he’s smiling at us,” Chase said after the game.
“I love the direction this team is going. We’re not relying on one or two players. We’re all pulling together in important moments.”
Babar said Pakistan’s lack of partnership has proved costly.
“As a batting unit, we were not up to the mark today. We kept losing wickets in quick succession and our batting also failed. That’s something we are working on,” he said.
The second and final Test match in Port of Spain begins on Sunday.
