49ers coach Kyle Shanahan injured in car accident before training camp

San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan is recovering after a tragic accident.

An NFL team announced that its head coach was injured in a car accident during the league’s summer break and will participate in training camp on a limited basis while recovering.

“San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a traffic accident last week and sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries,” the 49ers said in a statement on the team’s social media channels on July 25. “Coach Shanahan will participate in limited team activities at the start of training camp until he recovers. Coach Shanahan and the 49ers organization would like to sincerely thank all first responders involved for their efforts and care.”

On July 14, Shanahan, the 49ers’ head coach since 2017, crashed into an SUV near his home in Northern California, leaving him with a concussion, broken nose, multiple ribs and a broken hand, multiple news outlets reported, citing people close to the situation. The 46-year-old also reportedly required 40 stitches to his face.
