cerebrum Shares rose about 5% on Thursday after the company struck a deal with. advanced micro device This involves the two chipmakers collaborating on artificial intelligence systems.
Cerebras CEO Andrew Feldman said at AMD’s AI conference in San Francisco that the company’s chips will be used in AMD’s Helios AI system, which will be installed in Cerebras data centers starting later this year. Server buyers can also configure AMD systems using the company’s “wafer-scale” chips.
AMD detailed its new chip and Helios integrated system at the event.
The partnership highlights how important “ultra-low latency” has become for AI companies. Chips like those made by Cerebras are configured to provide AI first answers as quickly as possible, making tradeoffs in flexibility and total power. The companies claimed that their systems deliver five times more tokens per watt per second than their competitors.
AMD’s rival Nvidia acquired Groq’s assets in December for $20 billion and integrated the company’s low-latency technology into its systems.
“When something becomes a necessity, people want to use it, and they want to use it quickly,” Feldman says.
Cerebras went public in May and was a stock with particularly volatile price movements in its early days. After going public at $185, the stock soared to $386.34 during its initial public offering, but fell below $161 in late June. The stock is trading at $220 after Thursday’s rally.
In January, Cerebras announced a deal with OpenAI that will provide it with 750 megawatts of computing power through 2028, worth more than $10 billion.
