The United States and Iran have not reached a deal to end their four-month war, but President Donald Trump said Saturday there was “no need to rush” to do so.

President Trump said in an interview with his daughter-in-law Lara Trump on Fox News that he wants a deal that guarantees Iran will never acquire nuclear weapons. He also said that while it would be desirable for an agreement to be concluded quickly, there was no intention to rush the process. The president also threatened further military action if negotiations broke down.

President Trump said, “I want to say we’re in a hurry because gas prices are going to plummet, but if we’re in a hurry, we won’t be able to get a good deal.” “And I think slowly but surely, we’re getting what we want. If we don’t get what we want, we’re going to end it another way.”

“We’re going to make a big deal. (If not) we’ll go back and finish it militarily,” he said.

With the war at a fragile truce, U.S. and Iranian negotiators have been trying for weeks to reach an agreement to end the conflict. The conflict has wreaked havoc on global energy markets and pushed inflation to its highest level since May 2023, following Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz at the start of the war.

U.S. gas prices averaged about $4.34 per gallon on Sunday, according to AAA.

The strait, which transports about a fifth of the world’s oil, remains largely impassable.

President Trump demanded that Iran never acquire nuclear weapons as part of the peace deal and agree to immediately reopen the strait.

The president ended talks at the White House on Friday without making a decision on the deal, saying he intended to make a “final decision” during the meeting.

According to an Axios report on Saturday, President Trump has called for edits to the draft agreement on handling Iran’s nuclear material and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.

In an interview with Fox, President Trump said that in addition to banning development, he also added language to the deal that would prohibit Iran from purchasing nuclear weapons.
