Anthropic raises $65 billion in latest funding round at $965 billion valuation

Anthropic is now Silicon Valley’s most valuable artificial intelligence company.

The AI giant announced a $65 billion Series H funding round on Thursday at a valuation of $965 billion. With this funding, the company’s valuation has exceeded that of competing AI research institute OpenAI.

CNBC reported in late April that Anthropic was in talks to raise financing.

The latest round was led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks, and Sequoia Capital, and nearly tripled Anthropic’s valuation from February’s valuation of $380 billion. The company said the funding also includes $15 billion in previously committed investments, including $5 billion from Amazon.

Anthropic’s biggest competitor, OpenAI, completed a record $122 billion funding round and was valued at $852 billion as of late March.

Anthropic’s revenue has exploded thanks to its popular AI coding assistant, Claude Code. Anthropic also reported a revenue run rate of $47 billion on Thursday. That’s up from a run rate of $30 billion earlier this year and annual revenue of $10 billion last year.

The company released its latest model, Claude Opus 4.8, early Thursday. Anthropic also captivated Wall Street by announcing the Claude Mythos Preview, a model with advanced cybersecurity features available only to a select group of companies.

“Claude has become an increasingly integral part of our growing global customer community, and we continue to work tirelessly to make tools like Claude Code and Cowork more useful, more powerful, and more adaptable to our customers’ needs,” Anthropic Chief Financial Officer Krishna Rao said in a Thursday press release. “This funding will help us meet the historic demand we are experiencing, stay at the forefront of research, and bring Claude to more research sites.”

Anthropic’s latest round comes as the leading AI model maker prepares to go public.

SpaceX, the parent company of Elon Musk’s AI startup SpaceXAI, filed a prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Commission last week for an initial public offering.

When Musk merged SpaceX with his AI startup in February, the combined company was valued at $1.25 trillion.

OpenAI is preparing to file a confidential IPO prospectus in the coming days or weeks, CNBC has confirmed.

The startup, led by Sam Altman, is aiming to go public as early as September, people familiar with the matter said. The person asked not to be named because the decision is internal.

Not to be left behind, Anthropic is also preparing for an IPO behind the scenes, but the timing of the effort remains in flux, CNBC previously reported.
