Google unveils Gemini Spark, a 24/7 agent assistant integrated with Gmail at IO 2026

Google may have an underappreciated advantage in the race to build compelling personal AI agents. That means Google already has all your email.

At the Google I/O developer conference on Tuesday, the company announced a new agent personal assistant called Gemini Spark, built from the Gemini base model and Google Antigravity’s agent harness.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai described Spark as the next evolution of smart digital assistants that use agent AI to perform long-term tasks with minimal supervision.

“This is a personal AI agent that helps you navigate your digital life, taking actions on your behalf and according to your instructions,” Pichai told reporters at a product briefing. “It runs seamlessly on a dedicated virtual machine on Google Cloud, so you don’t have to leave your laptop open to see it working.”

Spark follows a wave of popular agent products from major AI labs, particularly Anthropic’s Claude Cowork agent and OpenAI’s ChatGPT agent, but it’s especially valuable because it’s integrated with Google’s large suite of products. Spark includes out-of-the-box integrations with Gmail, Google Docs, and other Google Workspace products, saving users the hassle of connecting and setting up permissions with external apps.

Users can email Spark directly through a dedicated Gmail address, and agents can interact directly with the web through Chrome. On mobile, you can also track your agent’s progress through the new Android Halo system.

“Need to email a status update to your boss? Spark pulls all the facts from emails, docs, sheets, and slides and lets you create a draft,” said Josh Woodward, vice president of Gemini Apps and AI Studio at Google Labs. “Small businesses use Spark. They can monitor their inboxes so they never miss a customer question.”

Like other agent assistants, Spark can be integrated into a wide range of services via MCP, and Google expects to roll out more connections in the coming months.

Spark is currently being tested at Google. The company plans to make it available to Google AI Ultra subscribers next week.
