The Spanish champions visit Atletico on Saturday, looking to maintain or extend their lead at the top of La Liga ahead of two more games against Diego Simeone’s side in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Barça have faced Atlético three times this season, winning in La Liga in December but losing in the Copa del Rey semi-finals in two games.
In the absence of Rafinha, who will be sidelined until May with a hamstring injury, the onus will fall on 18-year-old winger Yamal to provide Barca with the magic they need to advance in what is sure to be a tough battle on two fronts with Atlético looming.
Yamal played for Spain this week in a goalless draw with Egypt at Espanyol’s stadium in Cornellá, which drew Islamophobic chants from home supporters that the teenager, who is Muslim, denounced.
“To those who sing these things: Using religion as a form of mockery on the pitch shows you are ignorant and racist,” Yamal wrote on social media.
Since Yamal burst onto the scene at the age of 15, he has shown maturity beyond his years, starring as Spain won Euro 2024, and blossomed even further last season as Barça won the domestic treble.
The youngster, who is often compared to Lionel Messi from Barça’s La Masia youth team, seems to reserve his best performances for the big moments.
Yamal has scored six goals in Barça’s last seven competitive matches and the Catalan giants will be hoping he can continue his form until the end of the season.
He admitted in February that he hasn’t been happy with this season, due in part to a long-term groin injury, but that he’s been feeling better lately.
“The desire to smile on the pitch is something I haven’t had in a long time. I’m very happy, happy to be playing,” Yamal said after scoring his first career hat-trick against Villarreal.
In recent weeks, Barça have relied on forwards in attack and goalkeeper João García at the other end.
Strikers Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres have struggled to maintain their form, while Marcus Rashford has seen a slight decline in form.
Rafinha’s injury paved the way for the England international, on loan from Manchester United, to start on the left wing again.
Yamal’s pressing and off-the-ball work is a great example of Rashford, who, despite contributing a lot in terms of assists, sometimes lacks the relentless energy and focus that Hansi Flick demands from his forwards.
Simeone’s Atlético side sit in fourth place, a wide margin behind fifth-placed Real Betis, and have little chance to play in the league, but will be hoping to build momentum ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final first leg at Camp Nou.
The La Liga showdown is a preview of the Champions League quarter-final series between the Spanish clubs.
This match will be the first of three matches between Barcelona and Atlético to be played in 10 days. The Spanish rivals will play each other five times within two months. The two sides also faced each other in the Copa del Rey semi-finals in February and March, with Atletico advancing to the final with a 4-3 aggregate victory.
Champions League matches will be held in Barcelona on Wednesday and in Madrid on April 14th. Barcelona are aiming to reach the Champions League semi-finals for the second consecutive season, while Atlético are aiming to return to the top four for the first time since 2017.
