Dion revealed that he has been diagnosed with an “extremely rare” progressive neurological disease called Stiff Person Syndrome, which most people have probably never heard of.
“You know, I’ve always been an open person,” she said in an Instagram video. “I wasn’t ready to say anything before, but now I am. I’ve been dealing with my health issues for a long time, and it’s been really difficult to face these challenges and talk about everything I’ve been through.”
Dion explained that she suffered from muscle spasms that affected “every aspect” of her daily life, made it difficult to walk at times, and, most sadly, made it impossible for her to return to the tours she had planned.
“I work hard every day with my sports medicine therapist to regain my strength and ability to perform again,” Dion said. “But I have to admit it was quite a struggle.”
According to the National Institutes of Health, symptoms include stiffness of the muscles in the torso, arms, and legs, and hypersensitivity to noise, touch, and emotional distress, all of which can cause muscle spasms.
