Papa Essiedu talks about death threats since appearing in the Harry Potter TV series

HBO “Harry Potter” actor Draco Malfoy details major changes to his character in the new show

Papa Essiedu opens up about a worrying reality.

The Shakespearean stage actor, who was announced to play Severus Snape (previously played by Alan Rickman) in the new Harry Potter television series, has spoken out about the racism he has endured since joining the cast of the HBO show.

“That’s really important,” he said in an interview with the London Times published March 21. “The reality is, if you look at Instagram, you’ll see someone saying, ‘I’m going to come to your house and kill you.’ So I’m pretty sure I won’t get killed, but it could age me horribly!”

“But yeah, I think I’m fine, but no one should have to go through something like this in their work,” she said of the online criticism she received for appearing on the series. “A lot of people put their lives on the line for their jobs. I play a wizard in ‘Harry Potter,’ and I’d be lying if I said it didn’t affect me emotionally.”

But as hurtful as the comments are, Paapa pointed out that staying offline is not a realistic option to escape hateful comments.
