Threads’ new “Dear Algo” AI feature lets you personalize your feed

Threads will introduce AI-powered features that will allow users to personalize their feeds, the Meta-owned social network announced Wednesday. The platform’s new “Dear Algo” feature allows users to tell threads what they want to see more or less of temporarily in their feed.

To use this feature, users must type “Dear Algo” into a post in a public thread, followed by more or less what they want to see. For example, if you want to see more content about popular podcasts, you can post, “Hey Argo, show me more posts about podcasts.” Your feed will be throttled for three days after your request is submitted.

It’s worth noting that Dear Algo works through public posts, so other people can see your requests and can even repost and apply them to their own feeds. This aspect of the feature may be a stumbling block for some users, as they may not want their requests exposed. But Meta says he sees this as a way for users to discover new conversations and topics, turning personalization into a community experience.

By allowing users to temporarily influence what appears in their feeds, Threads can gain an edge over its competitors by offering features not available on competing platforms.

“Threads is the place you go to find out what’s happening right now,” the company said in a blog post. “But sometimes what’s important to you changes in the blink of an eye, and you want your thread feed to reflect that, whether it’s seeing more posts during live NBA games or fewer posts about TV shows you haven’t watched yet.”

Threads and its competitors X and Bluesky already offer users an easy way to indicate their preferences with a “Not Interested” button, but the new Dear Algo feature takes personalization one step further. This feature also helps make threads feel more real-time, something that X has historically been well known for.

Dear Algo is currently available in the United States, New Zealand, and Australia, and Threads plans to introduce it to more countries in the future.

The release of this new feature comes weeks after a report from market intelligence firm Similarweb suggested that Threads was surpassing X in daily mobile usage. While Threads on the web is still dominated by X, the Threads mobile app for iOS and Android has continued to see an increase in daily active users over the past few months.

According to the report, as of January 7, 2026, Threads had 141.5 million daily active users on mobile and X had 125 million daily active users.
