Saudi Arabia will do “everything possible” to sign Liverpool star Mohamed Salah during the winter transfer window, a source at the country’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) has revealed.

“We are following Salah’s position closely and believe that a loan or contract buyout is possible,” the source said on condition of anonymity on Tuesday, referring to the conflict between the Egyptian and Liverpool.

“At the moment there are no direct negotiations or discussions with the club, but a transfer will take place at the appropriate time.”

PIF sources say the wealthy Gulf monarchy is hoping to sign the Egyptian winger in the next transfer window in January to join star players such as Saudi Arabia’s Cristiano Ronaldo.

PIF owns a 75% stake in Al Hilal, Al Nasr, Al Ahly and Al Ittihad, but it is not alone in its desire to land the Arab world’s biggest soccer star, the people said.

“There is competition within the Saudi league to bring Salah,” the source said, adding that clubs affiliated with Saudi Arabia’s state-run oil and gas company have also expressed interest.

“Aramco’s Al Qadosia are also interested, so it’s not just PIF clubs.”

Ronaldo plays for Al Nasr, Salah’s former Liverpool teammate Darwin Nunez is at Al Hilal, and fellow former Premier League player of the season N’Golo Kante is at Al Ittihad, but Salah is the biggest football star to come from an Arab country.

Salah said he felt “thrown under the bus” by Liverpool and no longer has a relationship with manager Arne Slott after coming on as a substitute in Sunday’s 3-3 draw with Leeds.

The 33-year-old Egyptian forward was subsequently left out of Liverpool’s squad for Tuesday’s Champions League game against Inter Milan.

Salah played a key role in Liverpool’s two Premier League titles and one Champions League title during his iconic spell on Merseyside. He led Liverpool to the title and signed a contract extension in April.

Salah is due to depart for the African Cup of Nations after next weekend’s home match against Brighton in the Premier League.

He suggested this match against Brighton could be his last game for the Reds before leaving during the winter transfer window.

In 2024-25, Salah scored 29 goals and provided 18 assists last season, but has been nothing like his former self amid Liverpool’s struggles this season, with the title holders sitting 10th in the table but scoring just four goals in 13 appearances in the top flight.

“Every player has ups and downs. Salah is only 33 years old and has a lot of work to do here,” said a PIF source.

“Salah is a footballer loved around the world and will have a huge impact on the Saudi league both on and off the pitch.”
