On Wednesday, four days after defeating Palmeiras to win their fourth Copa Libertadores, Flamengo clinched the Brazilian title with a 1-0 victory over Ceará at Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Maracanã Stadium.

This is the ninth title for Brazil’s most popular football club, and the third in the past seven seasons.

Samuel Rino, who signed a record deal for the club, scored the only goal against Ceará, as Flamengo maintained a five-point lead over Palmeiras at the top of Serie A with one game remaining.

The newly crowned team defeated Palmeiras 1-0 in the Copa Libertadores final on Saturday in Peru’s capital Lima.

They became the fifth Brazilian team in history to win both Serie A and Copa Libertadores, following in 2019.

Flamengo coach Filipe Luis said: “In a few years (the players) will realize what they have achieved.” “They are forever!”

Pele’s Santos won this double in 1962 and 1963, while Botafogo achieved it last year.

Meanwhile, Sao Paulo-based Santos boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation with Neymar scoring a hat-trick in the 3-0 win over Juventude.

Santos are currently two points clear of the bottom four in the relegation zone with one game in hand and will face third-placed Cruzeiro, who could move Palmeiras into second place.

The season is not yet over for Flamengo and they still have a chance of clinching the treble by winning the Intercontinental Cup.

The Carioca club will play CONCACAF champions Cruz Azul of Mexico next Wednesday, and the winner will face African champions Pyramids of Egypt in Doha on December 17 for a place in the final against European champions Paris Saint-Germain.
