Emotions ran high on the night when Europe (UEFA), Central America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF) secured the last eight of the 43 automatic spots for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with a historic win and the final goal.

With less than seven months to go until the expanded 48-team tournament co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States, European powerhouse Spain and tiny Caribbean island Curaçao were among the players to book spots late Tuesday amid tears of joy and wild celebrations.

Haiti, along with Panama, decided to return to the tournament for the first time in 52 years, making Curaçao, the smallest country in history with a population of just 156,000, to qualify for the World Cup on November 18.

It has also been a week of heartbreak and shock for some of soccer’s biggest names, including former European champions Greece and African powerhouse Nigeria, who were knocked out of contention for the world’s most popular sporting tournament.

Meanwhile, four-time world champions Italy have qualified for the European play-offs along with 15 other teams for four spots, while four-time Arab champions Iraq have qualified for the intercontinental play-offs.

Here’s what you need to know about the participating teams, the playoffs, and the big names who won’t be able to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Which country qualified for the 2026 World Cup?

Following the final round of direct qualification, here is the continental breakdown of the teams that qualified:

Co-sponsor: Canada, Mexico, USA

Africa: Algeria, Cape Verde, Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa, Tunisia

Asia: Australia, Iran, Japan, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Uzbekistan

Europe: Austria, Belgium, Croatia, England, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Scotland, Spain, Switzerland

Oceania: New Zealand

Americas: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay, Curacao, Panama, Haiti

When will the participating teams for the 2026 FIFA World Cup be decided?

Until March 31, 2026 at the latest. The final 48 teams to take part in the World Cup will not be known until less than three months before the tournament, as European qualification continues until March and the intercontinental play-off final is also scheduled for the same month.

Which teams will participate in the 2026 World Cup playoffs?

The playoffs are divided into two parts: European and Intercontinental.

The final four spots for the UEFA World Cup will be confirmed in the European competition, while representatives from all other continental groups will compete for the final two spots in the intercontinental play-off.

European playoff teams: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Czech Republic, Denmark, Italy, Kosovo, Poland, Republic of Ireland, Slovakia, Turkiye, Ukraine, Wales, Romania, Sweden, Northern Ireland, North Macedonia

Intercontinental playoff teams: Bolivia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Iraq, Jamaica, New Caledonia, Suriname.

How will the 2026 FIFA World Cup European Playoffs work?

After eight months of group stage qualifying matches, 12 group winners were confirmed, making up 12 of Europe’s 16 teams, the most on any continent, including former champions Spain.

The remaining fourth place will be decided in a playoff to be held in March, with a total of 16 teams competing, including the 12 second-place teams from the regular qualifying rounds and the top four group winners from the UEFA Nations League.

Each team will be divided into four playoff passes and four pots of four teams each, with the 12 second place teams in the group going into three pots and the other four teams into the fourth pot.

Each of the four passes will consist of two single-leg semi-finals and one single-leg final. Pass teams will be drawn later Wednesday.

The winners of the four finals will secure the final remaining UEFA World Cup spot.

The semi-finals will be held on March 26th and the final on March 31st.

What are the 2026 World Cup Intercontinental Playoffs and how will they work?

The intercontinental play-off will feature six teams from the other four continents’ soccer bodies to determine the final two non-European finalists who will qualify for the World Cup.

Asia will be represented by Iraq, Africa will be represented by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, CONCACAF will be represented by Jamaica and Suriname, Oceania will be represented by New Caledonia, and South America will be represented by Bolivia.

The top two seeded teams (Iraq and the Democratic Republic of the Congo) will qualify directly for two finals, while the remaining two teams will be decided via two semi-finals between the remaining four teams.

The schedule for the intercontinental playoffs has not yet been confirmed.

Which major teams were excluded from the qualifiers?

Nigeria is one of the latest big names to be eliminated from qualifying, following Chile, which finished third in 1962.

China is not considered one of Asia’s soccer powers, but their focus on building games at home and aiming for another World Cup appearance after 2002 was dashed on June 5.

Other shocking omissions: Cameroon, Mali, Costa Rica, Greece and Serbia.

When and where will the 2026 FIFA World Cup draw take place?

US President Donald Trump confirmed in August that the World Cup draw would be held on December 5th at Washington’s Kennedy Center, and did not rule out the possibility that he himself would oversee the tournament.

The draw will begin at noon local time (17:00 GMT).

Will Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi play in the 2026 FIFA World Cup?

Earlier this month, Ronaldo admitted the tournament would be his hymn on football’s biggest stage.

“Absolutely, yes, because I will be 41 years old[at the World Cup],” said the Portuguese superstar, who is also the all-time leading scorer with 143 goals for his country.

“I gave everything for football. I have been playing the game for the last 25 years. I have done everything. I have achieved a lot of records in different scenarios, both for club and for the country. I am really proud of it. So let’s enjoy this moment and live in the moment.”

Meanwhile, Messi has also expressed hopes of leading Argentina’s title defense in North America, but admitted that his age and fitness will dictate his role.

Speaking to NBC News in October, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner said he would take time to assess his health before deciding whether to play in the tournament next year.

“It’s special to be able to participate in the World Cup. I would love to participate,” said the Argentina captain.

“If I’m there, I want to be there, stay healthy and play an important role to help the team. Next year, when we start pre-season at Inter, I’ll evaluate it daily and see if I can really give 100%, if I can be useful, and then I’ll make a decision.”

“I’m really enthusiastic because it’s the World Cup. We won the last tournament so it’s great to be able to defend on the field again because it’s always a dream to play for the national team.”

When is the 2026 FIFA World Cup scheduled to be held?

The tournament begins on June 11th and ends on July 19th.

Who will host the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final?

The tournament will begin at Mexico City Stadium, with the United States hosting the final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
