Israel has accused Hamas of attacking Israeli forces in southern Gaza and military airstrikes on the city of Rafah, the first major test of a U.S.-brokered ceasefire.
Israeli military officials said Hamas attacked Israeli forces in Rafah, southern Gaza, with rockets and sniper fire, the latest Israeli attack in the area just nine days after a ceasefire began.
An Israeli official familiar with the matter said Israeli forces suffered casualties as a result of the attack. The incident occurred across the Yellow Line, the original demarcation line for Israeli withdrawal established in the cease-fire agreement.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was scheduled to convene security talks on Sunday morning, including defense ministers and military commanders.
Hamas has not yet commented on the accusations, but a senior member of the group, Izzat al-Rishq, said in a cable shortly after that the militants continued to abide by the cease-fire agreement and accused Israel of “fabricating weak pretexts to justify crimes.”
This is a developing story and will be updated.
