The opening song of Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl references William Shakespeare’s Hamlet character Ophelia, who faces a tragic fate.
According to the song’s lyrics, Taylor “could have drowned in depression” had she not been saved by true love.
“I heard you call into the megaphone,” Taylor sings. “You want to see me alone.”
The lyrics appear to be Travis Kelce calling out Taylor for not meeting him on her Eras tour.
“You swore loyalty to me and me,” the lyrics continue. “Just before you lit up my sky.”
Before meeting Travis, Taylor was fresh off her breakup from Matty Healy, who declared herself one of the “independent girls” in July 2023.
But after Travis went to a concert in Kansas City that same month, Sparks started flying.
Now Taylor’s fiancé has even appeared in the Easter egg game, teasing the lyrics to “The Fate of Ophelia” on Instagram in July. (We’ve had some adventures this offseason,” he captioned a photo with Taylor, adding, “Keep it up (100).”)
How does that connect to Taylor’s song? Well, as the lyrics go, “You dug me out of my grave and saved my heart from Ophelia’s fate/Keep it a hundred.”
