xAI announces $20 billion in Series E funding

Elon Musk’s AI company xAI (which also owns X), which created the Grok chatbot, announced it has raised $20 billion in a Series E funding round.

The company said in a blog post that its investors include Valor Equity Partners, Fidelity, Qatar Investment Authority, and other companies including Nvidia and Cisco as “strategic investors.” xAI has not disclosed whether these investments will be made in the form of equity or debt.

According to xAI, X and Grok have approximately 600 million monthly active users and will use the new funding to continue expanding its data centers and Grok model.

However, as xAI grows, so does its ability to cause harm. Last weekend, an X user asked Grok to create sexual deepfakes of real people, including children. Instead of denying these requests or activating some guardrails, Grok complied and effectively produced child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and other non-consensual sexual content of real people.

xAI is currently under investigation by international authorities in the European Union, United Kingdom, India, Malaysia, and France.
