Waymo will partner with Uber to provide Robotaxi services to Atlanta and Austin.
Uber Technologies Inc.
alphabet– The owned Waymo has obtained permission to begin testing the Robotaki at San Francisco International Airport and San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, announced on Tuesday.
Waymo partners with the airport to “start with testing immediately from employee testing to welcome Bay Area riders,” company spokesman Chris Bonelli told CNBC.
This means that the Robotaxis starts with a human driver on the plane, ready to control the vehicle as needed, and ultimately acts as a driverless ride hale service.
Waymo already operates services in San Mateo County, where the airport is based, and nearby San Francisco, but there is no permission to ferry passengers between the airport.
In 2022, Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport granted permission for Waymo to test and operate the service there, and earlier this month, Waymo secured permission to begin testing at San Joseminateta International Airport.
Last month, Lurie said Waymo could operate limited passenger services on one of Market Street, one of San Francisco’s main highways.
For general Robotaxi services, Waymo currently operates in Phoenix, part of the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Austin and Atlanta.
Tesla Testing of the Robotaxi service began in Austin in June, with human safety supervisors on board. The Elon Musk-led company is also being debated with San Francisco Bay Area Airport. Tesla has permission to operate paid car services in San Francisco, but cannot operate unmanned riding businesses there.
Tesla currently doesn’t sell vehicles that are safe without anyone else in the car, and is always ready to take over the steering and brakes.
