However, in April 2004, the now-defunct News of the World published an article, through a so-called “close family friend”, detailing that David and Rebecca allegedly had sexual contact that night at a club in 2003, and that they continued to exchange racy emails afterwards. According to the article, Victoria contacted Rebecca and warned her to back off.
So, with the Beckhams’ fifth wedding anniversary just a few months away, British tabloids were having their own field day reporting on the increasingly explosive cheating allegations. The situation escalated when Rebecca’s brother claimed he had “confirmed” to her that his sister had had an affair with a Spanish footballer.
Aides on behalf of the family said Victoria’s subsequent trip to Switzerland was a long-planned vacation with her parents and mother-in-law, and was not a rush to escape from the public eye.
With the scandal refusing to go away, David broke his silence and said in a statement: “Over the past few months, I have been reading more and more ridiculous articles about my personal life…The simple truth is that I am very happily married. I have a wonderful wife and two special children. There is nothing a third party can do to change these facts.”
